General procedure: the corresponding oily oxazolidine2 was dissolved in EtOH (1 mL) and treated with hydrazine hydrate (0.4 mL).The resulting mixture was left at room temperature for 2 d and then refluxedfor 3 h. The solvents were evaporated in vacuo and a concentrated aqueoussolution of NaOH was added to the residue. Extraction with CH2Cl2 (2 2 mL),drying over Na2SO4, and evaporation gave the crude 1-aryl-2-(methylamino)ethanol, which was recrystallized from CH2Cl2-heptane mixture
