EXAMPLE 14-[4,4-Dimethyl-2,5-dioxo-3-(2-phenoxybenzyl)-imidazolidin-1-yl]-benzonitrile 1) Preparation of 1-bromomethyl-2-phenoxybenzene (1.2): 2.5 g (12.5 mmol) of 2-phenoxybenzyl alcohol were dissolved in 45 ml of dichloromethane and admixed dropwise at 5° C. with a solution of 1.35 g (5 mmol) of phosphorus tribromide in 5 ml of dichloromethane. The mixture stood at room temperature overnight. Thereafter, the reaction mixture was admixed with 5 ml of saturated sodium carbonate solution, and the organic phase was removed, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. This afforded 3.25 g (quantitative) of 1-bromomethyl-2-phenoxybenzene 1.2. 1H NMR: 7.56, d, 1H, 7.4, m, 2H, 7.3, m, 1H, 7.15, m, 2H, 7.01, d, 2H, 6.81, d, 1H, 4.7, s, 2H. Molecular weight 261.99 (C13H1lBrO).
