In a single neck round bottomed flask1 -methyl-4-nitronaphthalene (29) (200 mg,1 .05 mmol) and /V-bromosuccinamide (228 mg, 1 .06 mmol) and AIBN (17.5 mg, 0.1 1 mmol) were dissolved in acetonitrile (5 ml.) and the resulting solution was heated to reflux for 5 hours. After the reaction was complete the acetonitrile was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in EtOAc. The Organic layer was washed with water (2 c 20 ml_), brine (2 c 20 ml_), dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to yield an orange solid. The crude product was purified by column chromatography (silica gel;EtOAc/Hexanes, 0:100 to 10:90) to afford 213 mg (75% yield) of (30) as a light yellow solid.
