A 400-mL Fisher-Porter reactor was charged with methanol (300 mL), concentrated hydrochloric acid (13.0 g), 10% Pd/C (4.0 g) and methyl-6- methylnicotinate (20.0 g, 132 mmol). The mixture was heated to 80°C and placed under 60 psi hydrogen pressure. The mixture was then stirred for 21 h under these conditions. The mixture was cooled and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure to give 6-Me-2 (27.0 g, quantitative). The ¹H NMR spectrum was consistent with the assigned structure.
