A solution of indole (5.0 g, 42.7 mmol) and tert-butyl 4-oxopiperidine-1-carboxylate (10.1 g, 51.2 mmol) was added tomethanol (50 mL) followed by KOH (4.78 g, 85.4 mmol) The reaction wasquenched byaddition ofwater (150 mL) toremove alarge amount of yellow solid, filtered and the residue was dried in vacuo to give the title compound as a tan solid
