Steps:
tert-butyl (3R,4S,5S)-3-methoxy-5-methyl-4-[methyl(L-valyl)amino]heptanoate
500 mg (1 mmol) of tert-butyl (3R,4S,5S)-4-[{N-[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]-L-valyl}(methyl)amino]-3-methoxy-5-methylheptanoate (intermediate 1) were dissolved in 50 ml of methanol and, after addition of 100 mg of 10% palladium on activated carbon, hydrogenated under standard hydrogen pressure at RT for 1 h. The catalyst was then filtered off and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. This gave 370 mg (quant.) of the title compound as a virtually colourless oil. [1366] HPLC (Method 5): Rt=1.59 min; [1367] LC-MS (Method 1): Rt=0.74 min; MS (ESIpos): m/z=359 (M+H)+.
