To a solution of tert-butyl 4-(methylthio)piperidine- 1 -carboxylate (280 mg, 1.2 mmol) (reagent preparation 12, step 2) in dichloromethane (8 mL) was added m-chloroperbenzoic acid (835 mg, 4.8 mmol) at 0 0C. The solution was warmed to room temperature and stirred for 15 h. The reaction mixture was partitioned between IN sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to give tert-butyl 4-(methylsulfonyl)piperidine-l- carboxylate (290 mg, 92% yield). MS (EI) for CnH2iNO4S: 206 (M-tBu+).
