2 Example 2: Protecting carbonyl in furfural with ethylene glycol
A mixture of furfural (96.1 mg, 1.0 mmol), ethylene glycol (124.1 mg, 2.0 mmol) and montmorillonite K- 10 (300 mg) in toluene (20 mL) was stirred at reflux for 2 hours using a Dean-Stark apparatus to remove water. After cooling, the catalyst was removed by filtration and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to give product (138.7 mg, 99%) as a light oil. 1H NMR matched commercially obtained 2-furfural ethylene glycol acetal.
