To a stirred solution of malononitrile (2.64 g, 40.0 mmol) in acetic anhydride (9 mL) was added 1 ,1 , 1 -triethoxypropane (8.04 g, 40.0 mmol). The solution was stirred for 15 h at reflux, cooled, and poured into water. The mixture was extracted with ether, and the organic extract was washed with aqueous NaHC0₃ and then brine. The solution was dried (MgS0₄) and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford a solid identified as 2-(l -ethoxypropylidene)malononitrile (5.80 g, 97%). The procedure was adapted from J Med. Chem. 2004, 47, 5894-591 1 .
