15 g of 2-aminomalonamide was weighed and added to 150 ml of toluene. 20 g of solid phosgene was added in portions while stirring, and the mixture was heated under reflux for 10 hours. After the reaction was completed, 30 g of 20% sodium hydroxide was added to quench the excess. The phosgene was extracted with toluene, dehydrated, and the toluene layer was concentrated to give 9.6 g of 2-aminomalononitrile.
