A mixture of 2-bromo-4,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid (5.22g, 20 mmol) and thionyl chloride (20 mL) were refluxed for 3h. Excess thionyl chloride was removed under vacuum and the crudeproduct was azeotroped from 50 mL toluene, followed by high vacuum drying for 2h to give the desired product 2-bromo-4,5-dimethoxybenzoyl chloride as a clear oil that was used without further purification (5.6g, quantitative yield).
