Steps:
2-Carbethoxy-3 (2H) benzofuranone (2)
A mixture of freshly distilled methyl salicylate 1(7.6g), ethyl bromomalonate (12g) and anhydrous potassium carbonate (15g) in dry acetone (75 ml) was heated under reflux on a water bath with constant stirring for 13 hr. The product was filtered and potassium salts were washed with dry ether until colorless. The filterate was suspended in water (200ml) and cooled thoroughly in ice bath. The suspension was carefully acidified with dilute acid and the 2-carbethoxy-3 (2H) benzofuranone which was separated as colorless solid was collected by filtration. On recrystallization from petroleum ether it was obtained as colourless needles (m.p. 640, Yield : 67.96%, 7g).
