A catalyst forms to produce 3PN, 2M3BN, or a combination thereof. The same nickel complexes also react with 2M3BN to produce 3PN.Nickel complexes of Ligand B of Example 16 contact HC≡N and BD in a reaction zone. A catalyst forms to produce 3PN, 2M3BN, or a combination thereof. The same nickel complexes also react with 2M3BN to produce 3PN.In the presence of a Lewis acid promoter, like ZnCl₂, the soluble nickel complexes of Ligand A from bottle reactors of Examples 1 to 12 contact HC≡N and 3PN in a reaction zone.
