A phenol or thiophenol of formula (XV, X = OH, or SH, 30 mmol) was dissolved in 2M aqueous sodium hydroxide (30 mmol). To the mixture, β- propionic lactone (30 mmol) was added and the reaction was refluxed for two hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and acidified with HCl to pH < 4 and extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic extracts were extracted with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate. The basic aqueous layer was acidified to pH < 4 and then extracted with ether. This ether extract was then partitioned with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo to give an off-white solid of formula (XVI, X = O, or S, n = 2).
