Steps:
C Step C: 3-(2-chloroethvDpyridine
To a solution of 2-(pyridin-3-yl)ethanol (4.8 g, 39 mmol, 1 equiv) and DMF (1 mL) in CHCb (50 mL) was added SOCL (3.1 mL, 43 mmol, 1.1 equiv) dropwise at room temperature under N2 atmosphere and then the reaction mixture was stirred at 65°C for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was poured into saturated NaHCCb solution and extracted with DCM (3 * 100 mL). The combined organic phase were washed with brine (30 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2S04, filtered and concentrated to afford the title compound 3- (2-chloroethyl)pyridine as a red oil (5 g, 80% yield). LC-MS: m/z 142.1 (M+H)+
