Cone. HNO3 (12.5 ml) was added to a sol. of 3,5-dibromo-pyridine JV-oxide (4.5 g, 17.8 mmol) in cone. H2SO4 (16 ml). The r.m. was refluxed for 4 h., then cooled and poured onto ice-water. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration and dried. Yield: 3.1 g of intermediate 108 (58 %), which was used as such in the next step
