To a stirred solution of thiophen-3-ylmethanol (2 mmol, 0.29 g) in dry DCM (20 mL) under an inert atmosphere was added phosphorous tribromide (4 mmol, 0.38 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 h, and then concentrated in vacuo and partitioned between saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and DCM. The layers were separated and the aqueous was extracted twice more with DCM. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give a quantitative yield of 3-(bromomethyl)thiophene. 1H NMR (CDCl3): 7.09 (2H, m), 6.94 (1H, dd, J 4.9, 1.3 Hz), 4.33 (2H, s).
