[0071] Preparation of Compound IV (85; SRI-22942). Valeraldehyde (10; 40 mmol,4.8 ml) was taken in acetone (6 ml), water (8 ml) and 1% NaOH (10 ml). This mixture was heated at 70 °C for 2.5 hours. The mixture was poured into H20 (100 ml) and extracted with chloroform which was evaporated to dryness to give the intermediate chalcone (11) (3.5 grams, 62% yield).
