Step D; (4-Benzyloxy-2-methyl-phenoxy)-ter/-butyl-dimethyl-silane 12 (5.03 g, 15.3 mmol) is dissolved in 30 mL THF. A 1.0 M solution of tetra-(?-butyl)ammonium fluoride in THF (18 mL, 18 mmol, 1.5 equiv.) is added; the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 4h. Concentration to dryness and purification by silica gel chromatography (10-30% gradient, ethyl acetate in hexanes) yielded 4-benzyloxy-2-methyl-phenol 13 (3.06 g, 14.3 mmol, 93%). 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ = 7.42 (m, 4H), 7.31 (m, IH), 6.78 (s, IH), 6.69 (s, 2H), 4.99 (s, 2H), 2.27 (s, 3H).
