2.1 Step 1: 4-(dibromomethyl)-2-fluorobenzonitrile
To a solution of 2-fluoro-4-methylbenzonitrile (5.4g, 40 mmol) in CC14 (40 mL) was added NBS (15.7g, 88mmol), AIBN (657mg, 4mmol), the resulting mixture was stirred at 90°C for 24h under N2; the mixture was concentrated to leave 4- (dibromomethyl)-2-fluorobenzonitrile (8.8 g, 80% yield), Mass spec: 292 (M+H)
