A mixture of 2-(4-nitrophenyl)acetic acid (18g, 100 mmol) and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (24 g, 200 mmol) in piperidine (6 mL) was stirred at 140°C for 2 hours. The solid was washed with EtOAc to give (E)-4-(4-nitrostyryl)phenol as a red solid (23.6 g, 98%).
