Ethyl 2-(p-tolyloxy)acetate (S01-133): (3a): To a solution of p-cresol (3.0 g, 28 mmol) in acetone (30 ml) was added potassium carbonate (1 1 .6 g, 84 mmol) and ethyl bromoacetate (5.6 g, 33 mmol) and the mixture was refluxed overnight. Potassium carbonate was filtered and acetone was evaporated to give the pure compound as a white solid (4.2 g, 90%).1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3) δ 7.08 (d, J= 8.5 Hz, 2H), 6.81 (d, J= 8.6 Hz, 2H), 4.59 (s, 2H), 4.26 (q, J= 7.1 Hz, 2H), 2.28 (s, 3H), 1.29 (t, J= 7.1 Hz, 3H).
