Reference Example 95 {5-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]furan-2-yl}methanol; To a solution of 5-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]furan-2-carbaldehyde (5.69 g, 18.5 mmol) obtained in Reference Example 94 in ethanol (170 mL) was added sodium borohydride (1.40 g, 36.9 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hr. The reaction solution was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the obtained residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with water and saturated brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate filtration, and concentrated. The obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate 90:10 - 50:50) to give the title compound (5.02 g, yield 87%) as a white solid. 1H-NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ: 1.81 (t, J = 6.1 Hz, 1 H), 4.72 (d, J = 6.1 Hz, 2 H), 6.46 (d, J = 3.4 Hz, 1 H), 6.80 (d, J = 3.4 Hz, 1 H), 7.74 (s, 1 H), 8.07 (s, 2 H).
