5.1.2 General procedure A (Bromination)

General procedure: N-bromosuccinimide (1.10 equiv.) and azobisisobutyronitrile (0.05 equiv.) were added to a stirred solution of 2-phenylacetonitriles (1.00 equiv.) in CHCl₃ at 25°C. The reaction mixture was heated to 80^°C with stirring, and stirred for 2 days. The reaction was monitored by TLC; after reaction completion, the reaction mixture was diluted with dichloromethane and washed with water and brine. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous MgSO_4(s), and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by Isco Combi-Flash Companion column chromatography to give the desired product.
