A solution of 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid (6.17 g, 33.8 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (2.38 g, 14 mmol) in ethanol (800 mL) was refluxed for 2 days. After the removal of the solvent in vacuo, the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with sodium bicarbonate solution and brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated to give 10Et (7.92 g, 100%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (500 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 10.29 (s, 1H), 7.95-7.93 (m, 1H), 7.57 (d, J = 1.4 Hz, 2H), 4.32 (q, J = 7.1 Hz, 4H), 1.32 (t, J = 7.1 Hz, 6H) ppm.
