4 Example 4. Preparation of 5,6-dimethyl-2-hydroxynicotinic acid 1
A mixture of compound 3 (11.5 g, 78 mmol) and dilute sulfuric acid (50%, w/w, 65 mL) was heated in an oil bath at 150 °C for 2 hours. The reaction was stopped, and the reaction solution was cooled to room temperature, poured into 100 mL of water, and stirred to obtain a yellow precipitate. The solid product was collected by filtration, washed and dried to give a crude product. The crude product was recrystallized from acetic acid as a solvent to obtain pure 12.6 g of 5,6-dimethyl-2-hydroxynicotinic acid as an off-white solid with a yield of 93%.
