DMF (500 μl) was added to a suspension OF 6-ACETOXY-3, 4-DIHYDRO-3H-QUINAZOLIN-4- one (6.0 g) in thionyl chloride (45 ml) and the mixture was stirred and heated at 90°C for 3 hours. Volatile material was removed by evaporation and the residue was azeotroped with toluene (20 ml) to give 4-CHLOROQUINAZOLIN-6-YL acetate (7.61 g, 99%) as a solid which was used without purification; NMR spectrum (CDC13) 9.10 (S, 1H), 8. 19 (s, 1H), 8.03 (d, 1H), 7.95 (dd, 1H), 2.38 (s, 3H).
