To a stirred solution of maleic anhydride (4, 2.45 g, 25 mmol) in Et2O (40 mL) was added o-aminothiophenol (2, 3.13 g, 25 mmol) in a dropwise fashion at 25 °C under argon; the mixture was stirred for 1 h. The separated precipitate was filtered on a Buchner funnel and washed with Et2O (25 mL). The obtained product was dried under vacuum to give pure acid 5; yield: 5.50 g (98%); mp 181-182 °C (MeOH).
