f) 5-Nitro-N,N'-bis-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)isophthalamide To a solution of 5-nitroisophthalic acid dimethyl ester (23.92 g, 0.1 moles) in methanol (100 mL), 3-amino-1,2-propanediol (16.52 g, 0.22 moles) was added with stirring and heated at solvent reflux for four hours. The solution was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The crude was crystallized inmethanol/ethyl ether, filtered off, and dried in vacuo to obtain 5-nitro-N,N'-bis-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)isophthalamide (30.3 g, 85%).
