A. 5-Acetoxyacetamido-2,4,6-triiodoisophthaloyl chloride 59.6 g (0.1 g-mole) of 5-amino-2,4,6-triiodoisophthaloyl chloride prepared as in Example 1, is dissolved in 100 ml of DMAc and 27.3 g (0.2 g-mole) of acetoxyacetyl chloride is added as the solution temperature is maintained at 25°-35° C. After the addition, the solution is allowed to stir and heated at 35°-40° C. for 4 hours to complete the reaction. The solution is cooled to room temperature and poured slowly into 1 L of cold water (0°-5° C.) with stirring to precipitate the product. The white solid is filtered, washed with cold water and dried, giving 69 g (99% yield) of the desired product. The product shows one spot by TLC analysis (EtOAc/CH2 Cl2; 30/20). The 13 C nmr data are consistent with the structure.
