2 Preparation of methyl 2-fluoro-5-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate:
Preparation of methyl 2-fluoro-5-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate: to a solution of methyl 2-fluoro-5-formylbenzoate (500 mg, 2.747 mmol, 1 eq) in EtOH (5 mL) was added NaBH4 (207.3 mg 5.48 mmol, 2.0 eq) and stirred at RT for 1 h. After completion, the solvent was evaporated, the residue was taken in water and extracted with EtOAc (3 x 20 mL). The combined extracts were washed with water (3 x 50 mL), brine (1 x 50 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2S04, filtered and evaporated to afford methyl 2-fluoro-5- (hydroxymethyl)benzoate (450 mg, 89 %) as an pale yellow liquid.
