Decenoic acid (12) (30.60 g, 180 mmol) was dissolved in dry methanol (300 mL) and 0.1 equivalent of sulfuric acid (1.84 g, 0.99 mL, 18 mmol) was added to the reaction mixture and it was refluxed for 20 h. After completion of the reaction it was quenched with saturated aqueous solution of NaHC03 (25 mL) and evaporated. The residue was dissolved in chloroform (300 mL) and washed with water (3x75 mL) and brine (2x75 mL), dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated. The crude product was purified by flash column chromatography (n-Heptane-Ethyl acetate; 20:1) to yield 23.50 g (65.90 %) of the title compound (lib) as a colorless liquid. GC-MS: >98.5% MS (El): 198.
