Synthesis of dimethyl maleate (5)
Maleic acid (25.0 g, 216 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (250 mL). (0167) Concentrated sulfuric acid (2.5 mL) was then added dropwise. After refluxing at 75 °C for 16 hours, the methanol was removed by rotary evaporator. Ethyl acetate (100 mL) was then added to the residue, and the solution was washed twice with saturated sodium bicarbonate (20 mL), and then with deionized water (20 mL). The organic layer was then dried over MgS04, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide a clear, colorless, oily liquid (30.0 g, 97%) after distillation of the oil at 140 °C (190 mbar). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3): δ 6.26 (s, 2H), 3.79 (s, 6H). Spectral data are consistent with published values.25
