Step 1. Preparation of glucotaconic acid diethyl ester: Glutaconic acid (Ig, 9.7mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (20ml). Catalytic amount of sulfuric acid was added thereto. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 12 hour. The resultant was concentrated under reduced pressure to remove solvent, and dissolved in ethyl acetate. Combined organic layer was washed with saturated sodium carbonate, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 1.3g (yield: 90.0%, white solid) of the target compound.
