Ethyl benzoylacetate (17.0 g, 88.4 mmol) and ethyl orthoformate (106 mL, 637 mmol) were dissolved in acetic anhydride (60.2 mL, 637 mmol) and stirred at 140° C. overnight. The reaction solution was returned to room temperature, then added with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated saline, dried using anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo. The obtained residue was purified using silica-gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate) and the title compound (20.7 g, yield 94%) was obtained as an orange oil.1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 1.14 (3H, t, J=7.1 Hz), 1.26 (3H, t, J=7.1 Hz), 4.10 (2H, q, J=7.1 Hz), 4.15 (2H, q, J=7.1 Hz), 7.43-7.46 (2H, m), 7.53-7.58 (1H, m), 7.71 (1H, s), 7.88-7.91 (2H, m).
