Compound 38a.
To a solution of compound 37 (1 g, 6.02 mmol) in DMF (10 mL) was added potassium carbonate (2.5 g, 18.05 mmol) and ethylbromide (2.24 mL, 30.09 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The crude mixture was then poured into water and extracted with hexanes. The organic extracts were washed with water, brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to give the desired product as a colorless oil (1.121 g, 95%). Product was used without further purification. 1H NMR (CDCl3), δ 1.40 (t, J = 7 Hz, 3H), 1.44 (t, J = 7 Hz, 3H), 4.08 (q, J = 7 Hz, 2H), 4.38 (q, J = 7 Hz, 2H), 7.09 (dd, J = 8 Hz and 2 Hz, 1H), 7.33 (t, J = 8 Hz, 1H), 7.56 (br s, 1H), 7.63 (d, J = 8 Hz, 1H).
