The solution of β-ketoester 10b (13.0 g, 50.7 mmol) in 30 mL of MeOH was degassed and [Ru(II)-R-BIBAP], which was prepared from RuCl2(benzene)2 (54 mg) and R-BINAP (75 mg), was added. An autoclave was charged with the above solution and reaction mixture was stirred under H2 (100 psi) at 100° C. for 12 h. The cooled reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by flash chromatography (9:1 hexanes:EtOAc) to afford the desired product 11b (13.8 g, 99%) as a white solid.
