A solution of 12 (201 mg, 1.6 mmol) in thionyl chloride (0.8 mL, 7.8 mmol) was heated in a 55 °C oil bath under argon for 4 h. This was allowed to cool and the excess thionyl chloride was removed under vacuum to give 13 as a red oil (230 mg, -100%); lU NMR (300 MHz, CDCb): d 4.20 (2 H, s, CH2), 6.33(1 H, dq, / = 3.0 & 1.0, Fur-H), 6.37-6.39 (1 H, dd, /= 3.0 & 2.0, Fur-H), 7.41 (1 H, dd, / = 2.0 & 1.0, Fur-H).
