20 mg of tangeretin (synthetic sample) were refluxed in 3 ml of a HCl solution in ethanol (1.25 M, Fluka) for 130 h. The ethanol was evaporated. Then fresh ethanol (3 ml) was added and evaporated. This operation was repeated two times to ensure that the product contained no remaining HCl. The product was obtained with a nearly quantitative yield. HPLC-UV-MS and 1H and 13C-NMR analyses showed that it contained 85.4 % of 5-desmethyltangeretin and 2.5 % of non-reacted tangeretin (based on UV at 214 nm).
