To a 0°C solution of 2-aminoethanol (32.8 mmol) and K2CO3 (164 mmol) in 80 mL acetonitrile was added a solution of ethyl bromoacetate (32.8 mmol) in 2 ml_ of acetonitrile over a 1 h period. The solution was stirred for 1 h at 0 °C and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give a residue which was subjected to flash column chromatography (0% to 10% MeOH in EtOAc) to yield the desired product in 41 %. (0387) Rf = 0.16 (5% MeOH in EtOAc); 1 H NMR (400 MHz, Chloroform-d): d = 5.48 (bs, 1 H), 4.71 (bs, 1 H), 4.15 (quart, 2H), 3.58 (s, 2H), 3.51 (m, 2H), 2.74 (m, 2H), 1.31 (t, 2H); (0388) UPLC-MS (ESI) m/z found 148.13 [M+H]+, required 148.10 [C6H14N03]+.
