Steps:
1.16.1 Step 1. methyl 2-(4-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl)acetate
[0224] A mixture of 2-(4-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl)acetic acid (1.2 g, 7.2 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (70 mg, 0.41 mmol) in methyl alcohol (20 mL) was heated under reflux for 13 hours under N2 atmosphere. The mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was taken up in ether and the organic phase was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2504 and concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography over silica gel (EtOAc/Hex = 1/5) to afford the title compound as a colorless oil (1.15 g, 88%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3) 6 7.32 (d, J = 8.4 Hz, 2H), 7.27 (d, J = 8.4 Hz, 2H), 4.67 (s, 2H), 3.69 (s, 3H), 3.63 (s, 2H).
