Ozone is generated from oxygen by passing an electric spark or silent electrical discharge through dry, and pure oxygen. This electrical discharge may be applied between two glass surfaces between which oxygen is passed. Many types of ozonizers (ozone generating apparatus) are known and commercially available for small-scale production of this gas for various uses. Ozone may be produced by electrolysis of chilled dilute sulfuric acid (e.g. 2.5N H₂SO₄) or perchloric acid at high current density (higher than that required to produce oxygen alone). A mixture of oxygen and ozone evolve at the anode.
