Steps:
p-Butoxytoluene (3a)
To a 20 mL dry Schlenk flask equipped with a stir bar was combined 4-methylbenzyl alcohol (0.122 g, 1.0 mmol, 1 equiv), tBuOK (0.224 g, 2.0 mmol, 2 equiv), nBuCl (80 mg, 1.1 mmol, 1.1 equiv) and ICyCuCl (6.6 mg, 0.02 mmol, 0.02 equiv). The mixture was stirred in 5 mL of anhydrous CH3CN under argon atmosphere at 80 °C for 2 h. Then the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by flash silica column chromatography [petroleum ether : ethylacetate = 20:1] to give yellow oil; yield: 0.158g (89%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.31 (d, J = 7.9 Hz, 2H), 7.23 (d, J = 7.8 Hz, 2H), 4.54 (s, 2H), 3.53 (t, J = 6.6 Hz, 2H), 2.39 (s, J = 14.9 Hz, 3H), 1.68 (dt, J = 14.5, 6.7 Hz, 2H), 1.45 (dt, J= 20.1, 10.4 Hz, 2H), 1.00 (t, J = 7.3 Hz, 3H); 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3): δ 137.3, 135.9, 129.3, 128.0, 73.0, 70.3, 32.2, 21.4, 19.7, 14.2; MS (EI) m/z (%): 178 (5.24), 105 (100).
