Stage #2: in water;toluene at 20; for 0.5 h;

(Example 28) (R)-2-Bromopropionic acid lithium bromide (0.26 g) was added to a mixture prepared by adding 10 ml of toluene to 0.50 g of (S)-2-methanesulfonyloxypropionic acid (obtained in Example 16), the resulting mixture was stirred at 60°C for 1 hour and then cooled to 20°C, 5 ml of pure water was added and, after 30 minutes of stirring at 20°C, the organic layer was separated.. The thus-obtained organic layer contained 0.19 g of (R) -2-bromopropionic acid (yield 45%, optical purity 92.3% ee).. The rate of configuration inversion from methyl L-lactate was 92.3%.
