REFERENCE EXAMPLE 2 Production of (R)-4-hydroxy-2-pyrrolidinone without adding a base catalyst An ethanol solution (50 ml) of ethyl (R)-4-amino-3-hydroxybutyrate (4.4 g, 30 mmol) was subjected to reflux under heating for 12 hours. Ethanol was distilled off and the thus-obtained crude crystals were recrystallized from ethanol (14 ml) to obtain pale yellow crystals.
