General procedure for xanthone synthesis using Yb(OTf)3:
General procedure: The phenol (1.0mmol), salicylic (gentisic) acid (1.2mmol) and Yb(OTf)3 hydrate (0.1mmol) were intimately mixed in a mortar the resulting powder was subjected to MW irradiation at 200W for 5min. After completion of the reaction by monitoring by TLC, Et2O (5ml) was added and the precipitate formed filtrated under vacuum. The filtrate solution washed twice with 3% NaHCO3 (5ml) and the organic layer was dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and the solvent evaporated to dryness. The solid obtained was structurally characterized as the desired product without the need of further purification.
