Propylene oxide (4g) was added to an equimolar mixture of tert-butanol (0.2 mol, 14.8g), iso-propanol(12.0 g, 0.2 mol) and ethanol (0.2 mol, 9.2 g) . Then 0.1 ml of trimethyl borate was added and 0.3 ml of 48% aqueous HF. The reaction started immediately. After the consumption of the propylene oxide (30 min) the mixture was analyzed with GLC to show a mixture comprising mono- propoxylated derivatives of tert butanol, isopropanol and ethanol.
