**Artesunate: An Overview**  

**Definition:**  

Artesunate is a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin, a natural compound extracted from the sweet wormwood plant (*Artemisia annua*). It is a key antimalarial drug known for its rapid action and high efficacy.  

**Function:**  

Artesunate works by generating free radicals upon interaction with iron in malaria parasites. These free radicals damage the parasite's proteins and cell membranes, leading to its rapid destruction. It is particularly effective against *Plasmodium falciparum*, the most dangerous malaria-causing parasite.  

**Applications:**  

Artesunate is primarily used for the treatment of severe malaria, including cerebral malaria, and is often administered via injection for rapid response. It is also used in combination therapies (ACTs - Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies) to treat uncomplicated malaria and prevent resistance. Additionally, it is being explored for potential anticancer properties due to its mechanism of action.
