Protirelin is used clinically as a diagnostic agent to evaluate the function of the thyroid gland. It is administered as an intravenous injection and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland. The TSH then stimulates the thyroid gland to release the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
