Imidazole: A Versatile Molecule in Chemistry

The imidazole nucleus constitutes the main structure of some known components of the human body, namely the amino acid histidine, vitamin B12, components of the DNA base structure, purine, histamine and biotin. In 1858, Heinrich Debus first synthesized imidazole by the method of "reacting glyoxal and formaldehyde in ammonia to form imidazole", but various imidazole derivatives were discovered as early as the 1840s. It also exists in the molecular structure of many natural or synthetic drugs, such as cimetidine, azomicin and metronidazole. Imidazole-containing drugs have broad application prospects in the clinical treatment of various diseases.

Imidazole compounds

Imidazole compounds are a common class of heterocyclic compounds with many important pharmacological properties. According to various literature surveys, imidazole derivatives have a variety of pharmacological activities: 

(1) antibacterial activity;

(2) anticancer activity;

(3) antituberculosis activity;

(4) antifungal activity;

(5) analgesic activity;

(6) anti-HIV activity.

What are azole antifungal drugs?

Azoles are a class of drugs containing azole rings that can inhibit the growth of a variety of fungi. Their mechanism of action is to inhibit cytochrome-dependent enzymes, destroy cell membranes, and cause viral cell death. They can be used to treat fungal infections of the body and skin, including tinea pedis, onychomycosis (fungal infection of the nails), tinea, and vaginal candidiasis.

Imidazole derivatives

Imidazole compounds occupy a unique position in heterocyclic chemistry, and their derivatives have important biological and medicinal values due to their chemical and pharmacological versatility, and have received widespread attention in recent years. Therefore, imidazole compounds have been a hot area of research for researchers for more than a hundred years.
